2017 Introductions from CT Daylily
Our biggest year yet- sixteen new hybrids. We certainly have been busy. This year is not for your standard daylilies. Four of these are of unusual form, eight are toothy and three have cristation. If you are in the mood for something different, 2017 is the year for you.
A Convocation Of Eagles
Howard 2017
(B.J.McMillen X Webster's Aggie)
6.75"/45",MLa,Dor,Tet
4 way;22 buds
Gold unusual from crispate-cascade with pale near white edge. Not sure about fertility--I no longer hybridize unusual forms. This one is almost a late, and is tall with real garden presence. The wingspan is a few inches more than the registered diameter of 6.75". I think some of the old names for groups of animals are interesting. From the web: "The terms used for assigning names to groups of animals are called 'terms of venery' in formal language. These 'terms of venery' derive from the English hunting tradition of the Late Middle Ages" I think the term is cool but someone must have had too much time on their hands to come up with all of these--lol.

Bed Head
Howard 2017
(Love For Jesus X Horny Devil) really!
5"/28",MLa,Sev,Tet
2-3 way,16 buds
Indian red self with toothy edge. Fertile both ways A bit top branched. Very attractive in a clump. Lee Pickles' Horny Devil has given us some real nice toothy seedlings.

Blondes Have More Fun
Howard 2017
(Bridgeton Geometry X Malcolm David Brooker,Sr)
5.75"/39",MLa,Dor,Tet
4-5 way;33 buds
Cream/seashell blend with yellow toothy, tendrilled edge. Fertile both ways. Quite beautiful with a great scape and bud count to boot. If you can only buy one of our new intros this is the one I would recommend. I'll see the first kids next summer. Bridgeton Geometry is the parent of our Wallingford Woolly Bully, that has shown to pass on toothy mid-rib cristation to its kids. If you look at the lower left image you can see two of the blooms that look like they are sticking out their tongue. Perhaps this is the source of that look.

Bucky Beaver
Howard 2017
(Ruffled Strawberry Parfait X Reap The Whirlwind)
6"/33", La, Dor, Tet
3 way;15 buds
Light coral/moccasin blend with yellow-green throat and yellow toothy edge. Fertile both ways. A nice addition to the late garden. After all these years that annoying character from the Ipana toothpaste commercials is still in my head. Maybe if I name a daylily for him he will be excised from my brain. Brusha brusha now kids!. Double fans.

Cecil The Lion
Howard 2017
(Fishers of Men X Bass Gibson)
6"/36"; La, Dor, Tet
3-4 Way; 23 buds
Glowing papaya whip with golden orange halo and matching toothy, hooked edge. I never heard of papaya whip as a color or anything else but that's what the color chart I use says it is...lol..Fertile both ways. Cecil was killed by an American trophy-hunting dentist in 2015 in Zimbabwe. There is much controversy about this act, which sparked
an international outcry and greater scrutiny of trophy hunting for the heads, skins, or other body parts of wild animals.
I love how this one "glows" and hope you like it too.

Disco Inferno
Howard 2017
(Highland Pinched Fingers X Firebird Suite)
6.5"/42"; MLa, Sev, Tet
3 Way; 18 buds
Bright orange-red unusual from cascade. Fertile both ways. I have had trouble getting my camera to accurately capture the color of this one. It was quite popular at the Regional meeting in 2015. The name takes me back to the 70's when I actually took Disco lessons to try to win back a girlfriend. It worked — even though my disco moves were more like John Goodman than John Travolta. Makes you want to sing:
"I heard somebody say burn baby burn — disco inferno....."

Draped In Grape
Howard 2017
(Self Determination X Desire Of Nations)
5.5"/36"; MLa, Sev, Tet
5 Way; 25 buds
Dark magenta with large plum watermark and matching picotee.
Fertile both ways. Real good branching on this one. I remember the first day I saw this one bloom in the seedling patch. With parents from Curt Hanson and Karol Emmerich I was not surprised with the results. You can see all the buds in the bottom image.

Flash Mob
Howard 2017
(Astral Voyager X Fe Fie Foe Fum)
7"/45"; MLa, Dor, Tet
5 Way; 35 buds
Dark violet unusual form crispate with medium orchid watermark and yellow-green throat. This is another tall one at 45", with scapes that do not lean. Fertile both ways but pods have been difficult. I have only tried hybridizing outside with this one — not in the greenhouse.. One of my faves from this year.
If you have never seen a flash mob-well, you don't know what you are missing! Just Google the term and you can watch any of the many you can find on the web. It is so refreshing to watch a group of people engaged in an activity for no other reason than to have fun and entertain those around them.

My Ruffy
Howard 2017
(Wallingford Wooly Bully X Dragon Fang)
6”/33”; MLa, Dor, Tet
3 Way; 21 buds
Medium orchid self with large lemon chiffon halo and toothy edge, and intermittent toothy midrib cristation. Yet another of the Wallingford Woolly Bully kids with occasional toothy mid-rib cristation — perhaps 15-20% of the time. I like this one the
best--for the color, the look when it cristates, with lots of teeth, and the plant habit. Fertile both ways-pods difficult
Selected by my friend Barbara White of Canada as explained here:
"H.’My Ruffy’ (Howard, R., 2017) named for my wonderful dog Ruffus who was nearly 17 years old when we had to have him put to sleep due to health issues.
Ruffy was a big part of our family and his sweet, kind and gentle disposition filled my heart with love. R.I.P my sweet boy, I love and miss you.
Thank you Rich for naming this beautiful daylily in honour of my beloved dog. It will have a very special place in my garden with the other family namesakes."
We love animals and I was so happy to be able to do this for Barbara.

Partying With The Village People
Howard 2017
[Cake Plate (Goldner Unregistered) X Augie Krupien]
7.25”/49”; La, Dor, Dip
3-5 Way; 25 buds
Blanched almond pinched crispate unusual form with veining, and quilled sepals. Fall colors in a tall, late-blooming, fun plant. Fertile both ways. Dedicated to anyone who ever sang along with "YMCA", a 70's song by the Village People, that is a favorite at weddings, sporting
events and many parties I have been to over the years. If you are a Macho Man or have been In The Navy, this one is sure to be a fave. I wish I had an image of the tall impressive scape — will post it if I find one.

Scorpion Tail
Howard 2017
(Lava Spike X Wallingford Wooly Bully)
6.5”/39”; MLa, Dor, Tet
2-3 Way; 15 buds
Light coral/firebrick red blend with darker halo and yellow eye zone with toothy edge with tendrils and intermittent mid rib cristation. Fertile both ways but pods are difficult. Another Wallingford Woolly Bully kid that shows toothy mid-rib cristation at times. I would guess it's 15-20% of the time and may be related to heat — possible high temperatures when the bud is forming.
Sometimes when you are trying to come up with a name for something it's as simple as what does it look like?

Shaggy
Howard 2017
(Wallingford Wooly Bully X Venus Fly Trap)
5”/35”; MLa, Dor, Tet
4-5 Way; 24 buds
Light coral with slight yellow halo and toothy edge, with intermittent toothy midrib cristation. I would estimate that the cristated look happens 15-20% of the time. This happens with many of the Wallingford Woolly Bully kids. I am not sure but I think heat may be a factor-perhaps when the bud is forming. I have two other intros this year out of WWB that do the same. Fertile both ways but pods are difficult.

So Cold
Howard 2017
(Mrs. John Cooper X Piece Of Sky)
5.5”/40”; MLa, Dor, Tet
3-4 Way; 25 buds
Pale amethyst fading to near white as the day progresses, with lighter halo. Fertile both ways.
I wish I was a better photographer. After many tries, I still can't capture the essence of this one. By noon, especially in a sunny location, it looks like a near white with the palest shade of amethyst-lavender. At that time especially, it looks "so cold.” I did not expect this from the parentage — was looking for a blue eye, but that's one of the cool things about hybridizing.

Stippled Shark
Howard 2017
(Stippled Statement X Reap The Whirlwind)
6”/35”; M, Dor, Tet
3 Way; 18 buds
Stippled orchid with darker eye and double edge with white toothy
outer edge. A good parent for stippled toothy kids. Top right photo
taken in sun. Fertile both ways. Very interesting look with the stippling and teeth.

Twisting By The Pool
Howard 2017
(Wigglesworth X Webster’s Aggie)
7”/34”; M, Sev, Tet
4 Way; 17 buds
Reddish/purple unusual form crispate with large yellow-green throat. I am not sure about its fertility. I am no longer hybridizing unusual forms — something had to give — lol. Name is from a
silly, catchy song by Dire Straits that I always liked. Wigglesworth may be the best parent ever for UFo's with movement and plant habit. Webster's Aggie has also been a real good
parent for me — pollen parent of our Explosion in The Paint Factory, and our other 2017 intro, A Convocation of Eagles.

You Had Me At Woof
Howard 2017
(Wallingford Wooly Bully X Unicorn Tapestry)
6”/34”; M, Sev, Tet
3-4 Way; 21 buds
Thistle/snow blend with yellow halo and gold toothy edge. Fertile both ways. Another intro from Wallingford Woolly Bully. Nice branching and it makes a very nice clump.
