Mae McCabe Introductions
Mae McCabe

Mrs. John (Mae) McCabe of Branford,CT joined the American Hemerocallis Society in 1950,
and remained active in daylilies for many years.  In 1970 she was elected to the AHS Board of
Directors and served six years, including four as the AHS Conventions Chair.  She was both
an AHS Garden Judge and an AHS Exhibitions Judge.  In 1977 she was the recipient of an AHS
Regional Service Award.  The Connecticut Federation of Garden Clubs officially listed Mae as a
Lecturer of Daylilies, and she received two state Federation citations: one for Horticulture (for
her work with daylilies); and the other for Conservation (for her efforts to save open space in
Branford).

Mae introduced three daylilies in 1978.   H. ‘Nutmeg Elf” is an 18”-28” dormant golden yellow
spider variant with a 3” spidery flower.  ‘Nutmeg Shadow’ is a 26” dormant purple with a yellow
green throat and a 4.5” flower, and ‘Nutmeg Sunshine’ is a 36” pink melon self with a tangerine
throat and a 6.25” flower.   In 2004 the AHS Awards & Honors Committee selected ‘Nutmeg Elf’
for the 2004 Awards & Honors ballot.  The garden judges voted ‘Nutmeg Elf’ an Honorable
Mention, giving the daylily the fifth highest tally of votes of the more than one hundred daylilies
winning an Honorable Mention in 2004.  Only one other daylily received votes from all fifteen
AHS regions. ‘Nutmeg Elf’ will now appear on the 2007 garden judges ballot as an Award of
Merit contender.

Mae passed away in 1985 leaving a legacy we all are proud of.
